In this Dec. 16, 2007, file photo, St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson carries the ball during an NFL football game against the Green Bay Packers in St. Louis. Jackson ended his holdout on Wednesday, aug. 20, 2008, while his agent continues negotiations for a new contract. Jackson is scheduled for a physical Thursday morning and could make it onto the practice field that day.

Rams running back Steven Jackson ended his holdout on Wednesday and St. Louis appeared on the verge of signing him to a new multiyear contract. Jackson told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he had agreed "in principle" to terms of a deal. He added that once a few details were ironed out, "We'll be pretty much done." The 235-pound Jackson, a bruising runner and the centerpiece of the Rams' offense, is...

Bengals hoping Henry avoids trouble (AP)

    08/20/2008 17:25

In this Aug. 1, 2007 file former Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry is shown at football training camp in Georgetown, Ky. Henry is back with the Cincinnati Bengals, four months after the team dumped him following his fifth arrest since 2005. A team spokesman says Henry signed a contract Tuesday Aug. 19, 2008, but terms were not released.

Chris Henry's return hasn't made much of an impact on his Cincinnati Bengals teammates, who have tried many times already to help the troubled receiver change his life. Now, they say it's entirely up to Henry to make good on his latest, unexpected chance. "There's not too much you can do, to be honest with you," receiver T.J.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck did not practice again because of a stiff back on Wednesday, and he may also miss his second consecutive preseason game against San Diego. Coach Mike Holmgren is trying to ensure Hasselbeck is ready for the regular-season opener Sept. 7 at Buffalo. "Absolutely your starting quarterback has to be ready for the first regular-season game," Holmgren said... Link

Five-time Pro Bowl center Tom Nalen is headed back to the operating table. The only player left from the Denver Broncos' Super Bowl teams of the late 1990s, Nalen needs another operation on his left knee after surgery in June failed to put him back on the field without pain. The 37-year-old Nalen will undergo another arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Thursday, said coach Mike Shanahan, who... Link

Walking with a noticeable limp, Edwards was relieved the injury to his lower right quadriceps wasn't as severe as he initially feared, but added he's not sure whether he'll play in... Link

Pats not concerned by poor preseason (AP)

    08/20/2008 17:42
The New England Patriots played poorly on offense in their first exhibition game. The offense and defense were shaky in the second game. It's only the preseason, so there are no signs of panic in their locker room, even with Tom Brady limited by a foot injury. Yet a team that was a perfect 18-0 before losing the Super Bowl certainly doesn't like the trend. Link
